Midfielder Nick Schmit and defender Mitch Hagen were named Nov. 14 as captains for the 2011 CHS Boys' Soccer team. The team could return as much as half its varsity roster. Newcomers from the 13-2-4 junior varsity team, which won the 2010 Catholic Cup at Fort Snelling, will bring plenty of firepower to next season's side.
Seniors Ben Kemper, Michael Schuweiler and Bret Schwinghammer were named to the 2010 Class A Minnesota State Boys’ Soccer All-Tournament team, presented Nov. 4 by Wells Fargo and the Minnesota State High School League. Schuweiler, a midfielder, was named an honorable mention member of the Class A All-State Team at an Oct. 24 banquet in St. Paul.

Cathedral claimed the third-place trophy in the Class A State High School Boys' Soccer Tournament with a 2-1 win over St. Paul Academy and Summit School (16-6-1) Nov. 2 at the Metrodome in Minneapolis. View the tournament brackets.
Sophomore forward Austin Mareck sparked the win with a slick pass to Mike Schuweiler for a goal 17:29 into the game. Schuweiler then set up a streaking Mark Shirley for a goal at 29:12, giving the Crusaders a 2-0 lead at the half. The Spartans’ lone goal came on Sam Forsgren's cross to Josh Gray at 69:36.
Mareck, a spot substitute most of the season, played major minutes. His role in the win symbolizes the 2010 team's depth and "many heroes" ethos. A dozen CHS players scored goals during the season, a rarity in a sport whose teams typically have four or five scorers.
Schuweiler, a senior captain, noted the team's character following the 1-0 overtime win over Mounds Park Academy Oct. 28 at Husky Stadium, St. Cloud.
"That's this team for you," Schuweiler told St. Cloud Times reporter Jake Laxen. "There are heroes all over this team."
In the quarterfinal, the heroes were Ben Kemper, Nick Schmit and Mitch Hagen. Kemper, a senior captain, rescued his teammates with a late-game save on a penalty kick. Schmit, a junior midfielder, followed up with a golden goal in the extra frame. Hagen, a junior defender, marked Zane Wold, helping keep the All-State forward off the scoreboard.
In the Section 8A championship, forwards Mark Shirley and Sam Wood combined for three goals in a road game 150 miles from home.
In the section semifinal, senior Danny Grundhoefer scored two first-half goals to pace a 3-0 win.
The road to the section title game included victories over Sauk Rapids-Rice, Little Falls and Hillcrest Lutheran Academy -- by a combined score of 9-1.
The unranked, unseeded and unheralded Crusaders won two games and lost one in the eight-team State Tournament.
This was Cathedral's highest finish in eight trips to the State Tournament since 2000. It was the first victory at the Metrodome.
The Crusaders lone postseason defeat was a 1-0 loss to Mankato East in a Nov. 1 semifinal at the Metrodome. Mankato East earned its goal on a scrum in front of the net with 3:17 remaining in the game.
CHS finishes with a 19-5-1 record, outscoring opponents 68-21. Coach John Pepper's squad shut-out 13 teams and was held scoreless just once.
Nick Schmit's overtime header goal and Ben Kemper's penalty-kick save were the difference-makers in the Crusaders' 1-0 State Tournament quarterfinal win over Mounds Park Academy Oct. 28 at Husky Stadium, St. Cloud. View photos from the game.
Schmit buried Michael Schuweiler's corner kick about one minute into the extra frame, sending the Crusaders (18-4-1) to an 8 a.m. Nov. 1 semifinal game at the Metrodome in Minneapolis.

Kemper said he guessed the Panthers' Zane Wold would go left on the 12-yard penalty kick with 23 seconds remaining in regulation play. The senior keeper leaped high and to his right, deflecting Wold's shot out of harm's way.
"That was a fantastic save," Coach John Pepper told St. Cloud Times reporter Jake Laxen. "It kept us alive. Such an outstanding performance from him tonight." View the Times story.
Junior defender Mitch Hagen was a blanket on Wold, marking the All-State forward from sideline to sideline.
If the Crusaders win Monday, they play for the Class A title 10 a.m. Nov. 4 at the Metrodome. Should CHS lose, the third-place game is 10 a.m. Nov. 2 at the Metrodome.

Taking advantage of their teammates' steadfast defense, forwards Mark Shirley and Sam Wood combined for three scores in the Oct. 21 Section 8A championship shutout of host Bemidji.
Shirley's first-half tally came after he and Wood scrummed in front of the net. The score remained 1-0 until the 9:11 mark of the second half when Wood threaded a through-ball to Shirley in stride and the speedy senior buried it in the back of the net.
Shirley returned the favor late in the game, feeding Wood a chip-shot inside the six-yard box with 21 seconds remaining.
Midfielders and defenders -- the heart of this year's squad -- combined with senior keeper Ben Kemper to limit the Lumberjacks to two shots on goal.
Mike Schuweiler and Bret Schwinghammer are the senior members of a midfield quartet that has frustrated opponents throughout the season, leading the Crusaders to 12 shutouts in 22 games. Junior Nick Schmit and sophomore Josh Robak have partnered with Schuweiler and Schwinghammer down the stretch.
Adam Rupp leads a trio of starting defenders who combine speed with physical play. Fans at Thursday's game saw the sideburned senior force several key turnovers in the second half against the likes of 18-goal scorer Kyle Fodness.
CHS advanced to the Section 8A title game with a 3-0 victory over top-seeded Hillcrest Lutheran Academy Oct. 19 in Fergus Falls.
The Crusaders were paced by two Danny Grundhoefer goals in the first 10 minutes. Mike Schuweiler added a goal early in the second half. Ben Kemper, aided again by a nearly impenetrable midfield and backline corps, recorded four saves. View Grundhoefer's opening goal in a seven-photo slide show.
The 2010 Crusaders finished the regular season with a 13-4-1 record. The team outscored opponents 53-19, recording nine shutouts. CHS went 5-1 against St. Cloud metro teams, shutting out three public high schools: Apollo, Tech and Sauk-Rapids-Rice.
